Sound the alarm on Labor's Bill
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is doubling down on cruelty towards people seeking asylum by introducing new far-reaching powers that would give him the power to deport non-citizens to a “third country”.
In practice, this could see the Minister threaten to detain people on Nauru – should they not willingly go, then the Minister can lock them back up in detention here in Australia.
This move is unprecedented, unjust, and goes against the spirit of the law.
Will you help sound the alarm by contacting your senator today and urge them to oppose this rushed and reckless Bill?
If passed, this Bill would:
-
Reintroduce invasive surveillance and monitoring conditions that infringe people’s liberty and personal dignity.
-
Create an expanded regime of offshore warehousing for people who the High Court has ordered must be released from indefinite immigration detention.
-
Allow the Albanese Government to ignore its international obligations and expose refugees to the risk of being returned to places where they face harm.
-
Separate people from their families and communities, preventing them from ever returning to their homes.
