Calling Party - Action For Afghanistan
Join us via zoom on Monday 15th August at 12pm-1pm AEST to make calls to demand that the Albanese Government provides safe passage for people fleeing the Taliban.
Demand #ActionForAfghanistan, and for the Albanese Government to provide 20,000 additional and urgent humanitarian places.
More than 211,100 people from Afghanistan have applied for humanitarian protection so far. Australia has a moral obligation to provide at least 20,000 emergency humanitarian visa places immediately. The former Morrison government only committed to 16,500 visas, spaced out over 4 years.
Over the last year, the situation in Afghanistan has rapidly deteriorated, with civilian casualties, extrajudicial killings, restrictions on women and girls’ rights, and the ongoing targeting and persecution of minorities including Hazaras and Sikhs, becoming increasingly a pattern.
Additional humanitarian places for people from Afghanistan as well as their families is urgently needed. The government must also ensure permanent protection to refugees already in Australia on uncertain temporary visas, provide resettlement opportunities to refugees in Indonesia as well as remove all delays and restrictions on family reunification pathways.
The Australian Government must immediately implement a substantial resettlement plan, over and above the current intake cap, to evacuate and grant protection visas for people at risk of violence and death from the Taliban.
Our asks are:
- 20,0000 additional and urgent humanitarian places (in addition to the 16,500 that will be spaced over 4 years and are not all additional to the intake cap).
- Provide permanent protection to people on TPV and SHEV, 5,100 of who are people from Afghanistan.
- Lift the ban on resettlement of refugees to Australia through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Indonesia.
- Prioritise the family reunification visas of people from Afghanistan in Australia, including those who sought asylum by sea.
Calling Parties are a fun, fast and powerful way to put pressure on our political representatives.
In this hour-long event, you will receive a briefing about the current state of play and how to make (and log) your calls, then spend about 30 minutes calling a number of senior government ministers and other politicians, before coming back together for a debrief and celebration.
